Subaru Freeride Series comes to Big Sky Resort

Big Sky, Mont. (March 7, 2014) - North America's premier Freeride World Qualifier, the Subaru Freeride Series returns to Big Sky Resort April 2-6, 2014 as the new Junior Freeride World Championships and as the final stop of the tour. The Subaru Freeride Series provides ski and snowboard athletes with opportunities to earn Freeride World Tour points toward possibly becoming tour athletes for the following season.

The Subaru Freeride Series begins Thursday, April 3, 2014 with the Adult 2-star event, followed by the Adult 4-star event April 4-5, 2014. The Junior Freeride Championship wraps up the weeklong competition event on April 5-6, 2014. The majority of the events are expected to be held on the Headwaters runs featuring angles upwards of 55 degrees with tight, technical lines.

For the last two years, the Freeride World Qualifier competition held in the Headwaters terrain was only for adult skiers participating in a 4-star event. This will be the first time the Resort plays host to the Junior World Championships, a 3-star event for ages 12-18 years old, and the adult 2-star event. This is the first year snowboarding athletes will have the opportunity to compete. The Freeride World Qualifiers range from 1 to 4-stars and enable athletes to earn a corresponding ratio of points based on their performance at competitions.

"We are thrilled to bring the entire freeride community together through the Subaru Freeride Series this season," said Bryan Barlow, Subaru Freeride Series Event Director. "These new additions will provide greater synergy between both freeride disciplines and enable a variety of ages and ability levels to learn from one another in a meaningful way."

The Freeride World Qualifier at Big Sky Resort will be complemented with festival activities designed to educate fans and athletes about the sport and culture of freeride. The Junior Freeride Tour is sponsored by Subaru, The North Face, Clif Bar and Any athlete who is 18 years old can participate only if they are currently enrolled in high school.
