Preparing for the Shedhorn Skimo Races

The Shedhorn Skimo is just around the corner, and whether you're a seasoned competitor or a newcomer to the exhilarating world of ski mountaineering, we've got you covered with essential tips. Dive into your comprehensive guide for race day success!

Get to know the courses

The Shedhorn Skimo offers a natural progression for racers:

Ramshorn Course

New to ski mountaineering? The Ramshorn race provides the perfect entry point with manageable terrain and elevation gain to build your confidence and skills. The route isfive miles in length with 3,500 vertical feet of gain, and traverses Challenger terrain.

Pronghorn Course

Ready to push your boundaries? Step up to the Pronghorn race where you'll tackle the legendary Big Couloir—a true milestone for any alpine athlete. This race is seven miles in length with 4,500 vertical feet of gain and covers similar downhill terrain as the Shedhorn race.

Shedhorn Course

For the ultimate test, the signature Shedhorn race awaits seasoned pros and endurance enthusiasts with its demanding course that will push your limits and have youscaling some of Big Sky’s most extreme terrain. This race is 16 miles with 8,000 vertical feet ofgain andis one of the toughest skimo races in the Northern Rockies.

Shedling Course

Perfect for up-and-coming skimo racers ages 14 and under. This race is three miles with 720 vertical feet of gain.

Practice with your gear

Practice with your equipment and get your heart pumping before race day—take on Hangman's Uphill Morning Route between 5:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. any day of the week (conditions permitting).

View the terrain virtually

We recommend all racers get familiar with the terrain your course will be skiing. Take time to review the maps, stats, and required gear for your race.

All routes are conditions dependent, and some segments may change depending on weather. Between now and race day, spend some time watching these terrain highlights:

Aid stations—What to expect

Each race will have aid stations positioned at key spots around the course. To keep you fueled, these aid stations will be stocked with the following:
