Mountain Biking FAQs
Big Sky Resort offers over 50 miles of biking trails to explore and some of the only lift-serviced biking in Montana. Biking usually runs from mid-June to mid-September. We offer bike rentals and lessons as well. Check our website for more information.
Bike haul tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket windows. Purchasing online will save you time and money. Check our website for rates and more information.
Please check our lift & trail status page for current information.
Downhill bike lessons do not include rental equipment or a bike haul ticket. This includes group, private, and multiday programs. Downhill group lessons can bundle all 3 (lesson, rental, ticket) for the duration of the lesson. If you need a bike and ticket during a group lesson, book the downhill group lesson package.
Big Sky Resort Gold season pass includes unlimited bike access for the summer before the winter of their season pass.
For Winter 2026/27 passes, you can add on a discounted Skypack for 2 days of bike haul access for $70 at the time of purchase.
All other Big Sky Resort, Boyne Sister Resorts, Ikon and Mountain Collective passes do not get discounts on bike haul lift tickets. For the best rate, purchase tickets online in advance.
For downhill mountain biking, prioritize comfort, protection, and breathability. We recommend a full-face helmet, knee and elbow pads, bike gloves, and goggles. Clothing should be loose-fitting, durable, and weather-appropriate. Consider baggy shorts or pants with a padded liner, a wicking shirt, and flat grippy rubber shoes.
The best shoes for mountain biking are ones that have flat soles and are made of a grippy material. If you don't have mountain biking shoes, we sell them at Big Sky Sports in Mountain Village. We do not have any to rent. Shoes like Vans work well as they have flat soles, but don't offer as much protection for your feet as a mountain biking shoe. Tennis shoes are acceptable, but your feet will not be as stable on the bike pedals.
In the summer, well trained pets are allowed on Big Sky Resort's hiking and cross-country bike trails. They must be leashed and under direct control at all times. Dogs are not allowed on downhill mountain biking trails.
Well trained pets that are leashed and under the direct control are allowed on the Explorer Gondola and Lone Peak Tram. The owner assumes all risks associated with bringing their pet on these lifts. Dogs are not allowed in Kircliff; the second floor of the tram.
Please pick up after your dog and be respectful to other guests on the mountain.
In the winter, dogs are not allowed on the mountain or any lifts.
